Acetylene, also called Ethyne, is commonly used as a fuel in oxyacetylene welding and metal cutting. Approximately 20% of acetylene is consumed by various industries for this purpose because of the extremely high temperature of the flame it produces. In a high quality torch, the flame reaches the highest temperature of any other mixture of combustible gases. Oxyactylene cutting is also used in many metal fabrication shops.
